Vestmanna, Faroe Islands July 28th and 29th 2018
Kvivik townshipChris arrived back from Australia – and while I had imagined I would be pleased to hand over the steering wheel I found I had become quite comfortable on the “other” side of the road.
It was a long winding road along the coast to Vestmanna with narrowing streets, steep hills and strange corners through Vestmanna and up to our accommodation.
Diverted to a village we could see below the cliff road down by the sea. Kvivik which was a pretty town with many black wooden buildings with white trim.
On the foreshore were the buried remains of Viking settlement with long houses visible under the turf. Viking ruins in Faroe Islands
One of the reasons we chose this time to come was St Olafs day ### – we had heard much about it but could not get accommodation in Torshavn over the St Olafs weekend prior to which was the Gay Pride March ### which we decided to miss.
After settling in we drove into Torshavn, followed the stream of cars to find a car park and wandered through Torshavn and the celebration. For Chris it was also his first venture into the city. As we wandered we met a young man in National costume and struck up conversation – he was studying music in London.
29th
We returned to Torshavn for the final day. We had hoped to stay for the midnight singing### but rain and jetlag overrode the desire.
Both of us were struck by the number of babies we saw in our wanderings. Walking past a corner we discovered a line-up of prams that seemed to speak for the population boom in the Faroe Islands.
While the sun was out and run held off we strolled the old town and harbour.
