Day 65 3rd July Kazbegi
We started to day by driving to Sno.It is renowned as the hometown of the Patriarch of the Georgian Christian Orthodox Church. He is widely revered across Georgia and has been a strong force for an independent Georgia when tensions with Russians have threatened to escalate. He is particularly noteworthy for being godfather to nineteen thousand Georgian children. This came about when he offered to Georgian families that if they had a third child he would be its godfather. This would seem to indicate his popularity as well as the success of his family development program.
Whilst in Sno we see a great example of a Tower and fortification.A lot of the villages in the mountains have such towers to protect themselves against the other mountain tribes.Stories abound of cattle stealing and family vendettas.
From Sno we drive to Juta where we start our walk.
We walk out of the village up a steep incline onto a beautiful meadow with small hotels.Kept walking until we came to some small falls which we decided not to cross. So we just sat gazing at the mountain and again realised how lucky we are.
After our walk were dropped off in the centre of Kazbegi and wandered around and saw an old church that was being renovated using government funds.Unfortunately the project appeared to be behind schedule.
As we walked back to our pick up point we got yet another view of the Gergeti Trinity church which we had walked up to the day before.
