Day 85 5th July

Today we are heading through Akureyri the second city of Iceland and onto a small farm at a place called Arskogssandur. On the way we stop at the Folk Museum at Grenjadar-Stadur.

The weather was atrocious but the house itself was warm and was full of artefacts used by the original inhabitants. It is probably an understatement as it consists of five or six house fronts that are joined internally. They all had turf roofs to keep the heat in. They also featured some interesting furniture, one favourite being the expandable beds. This allowed space usage to be maximised when the occupants weren’t sleeping.

After a warming coffee we headed off to see another waterfall the famous Godafoss.

Well, we lasted about ten minutes as a combination of rain and high winds made our excursion less than enjoyable. Obviously picturesque on a good day today was not the day for viewing.

We arrived in Akueyri in time for lunch and a quick browse of the town. Like most of the major places in Iceland it is easily walkable, parking was relatively easy and the architecture appealing. It has a small but busy harbour with several cruise ships in port the day we were there. After a quick visit to the Vindbudin we headed to our next overnight stay.

To get there we went along the Eyjafjordur another beautiful body of water hemmed in by mountains. We arrived at our beautiful little cottage nestled into the hills complete with a hot tub on the verandah. Pure bliss!!!
