Day 5th July
Today we set off to explore the famous “Gamla Stan” or old town of Stockholm. To aid us with an itinerary we used the handy guide provided by the National Geographic. See National Geographic Walking Tour To enter the precinct one has to go over a bridge which emphasises that Stockholm is spread over several islands of which Gamla Stan is one.The first impression we got was the number of tourists which up to this point we had managed to avoid ,but this is what happens when you visit one of Europe’s best preserved old towns. The colours, narrow streets and architectural oddities all in one place make for a thoroughly enjoyable amble and the hours disappeared as we discovered new sights around each corner.
In one of those corners we found a delightful restaurant that served good and relatively inexpensive food (For Sweden that is) with a busking pianist playing outside.
We then ended up going to the Nobel Prize Museum which had some interesting displays and videos of the winners but was not really presented coherently. It might have been better to to do a guided tour and get some of the facts about the process of nomination and awards.
A happy day rambling and seeing what this beautiful city has to offer.
