Culturally Modified Trees
This was a remarkable practice that seemed in such contrast to the massive deforestation that has taken place across the world.
Where possible to obtain wood for building the trees were not always chopped down.
A technique to remove planks but have the tree survive was common practice and evidence today is found throughout the old forests. The bark grows in a roll around the area where wood has been removed leaving a distinctive look that even we small groups of novices could pick by the end of the week.
I found this great illustration of CMTs on Haidamanga.com
Haida Nation provides more details about CMT classification information.
The wonderful book Cedar by Hilary Stewart also has explanation of CMTs and a whole lot more about the use and importance of the Cedar tree.
