Quebec City -Are we in North America or France -19th July 2015
Newly liberated from our touring experience and having said Bon Voyage to our new Denver friends Ruth and Steve we leave at 0630 to the airport. We make the airport in good time and after an uneventful flight via Montreal we arrive in Quebec City. First impressions are that all signs are in French alone and our taxi diver speaks no English. This is in contrast to our Montreal experience where everyone seems able to switch from one to another with each sounding like their first language. As we get nearer the city centre it becomes obvious from the architecture that we have left North America behind-we arrive at our B and B Chateau des Tourelles which is two thin apartment buildings jammed together against a “Dep” (short for depanneur which means “to help out”) which is a small convenience store containing everything you need including booze.
We were greeted by a charming Japanese woman, Sao who takes us to our downstairs room, which to Mel’s delight has a kitchen.
The street life on Rue St Jean outside the hotel is very Paris, filled with restaurants bars and epiciries and the odd cathedral, we have lunch at a local restaurant and the tour the old town past the old city walls. Cobble stones quaint shops and masses of tourists but lovely. A visit to tourist information helps us plot our trip north to Anse-St-Jean for kayaking. On our way home we go to several epiciries and get a delicious salmon pie and some craft beer which makes us happy bunnies.
