Work in Progress: Notes of Our Day More to Come Later

Sozopol one of the Black Sea beach resorts filled with sunbaking tourists in summer and summer is officially over at the end of September. We are here at the beginning of October.

Controversy abounds amongst archeologists and historians about the true nature of ancient finds across the world. In a recent excavation in Sozopol a church was excavated with a grave found nearby The body is said to be a Vampire owing to a stake through its chest

Plans to build require excavation to document and remove any ancient sites and artifacts. The local Lidl Supermarket has an explanation and display of items found under what is now the carpark. This includes gold decoration

Before visiting the controversial Beglik Tash we visit the nearby and overlooked Dolmen Graves. These have been authenticated as

Then on to Beglik Tash the Thracian Sanctuary – or at least the 50/50 question it is a Thracian Sanctuary? Some dissent amongst experts about this site with suggestion that nothing found there to validate the historian’s view this is a Thracian site yet many rocks are labelled as having a purpose – particularly fascinating is the Marriage Bed. Ouch! So uncomfortable.

And then a walk through the forest – the Thracian Trail. Past the Dolmen into the forest, along the Thracian fortress and out to the huge boulders to a view overlooking the river delta and harbour.

Late lunch and who could resist what Nadia described as “The best Tripe Soup in the World”! I can’t comment not being a Tripe eater but it was tasty particularly with the fresh garlic chilli paste mix added in to taste.

And on to the Sozopol Archeology Museum

Early in the exhibition a map of the St Kirik Island where many artifacts in the museum were discovered,

An Amphora style burial pot found and when opened the skeletal remains of baby were discovered inside.
